A video shows sewage being directly released into the Ganga from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that was established under the Namami Gange Project
A serious violation has come to light in Rishikesh’s Shisham Jhaadi area, just 150 meters from the Swami Narayan Ghat. A video shows sewage being directly released into the Ganga from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that was established under the Namami Gange Project — a flagship mission launched by the Government of India to clean and rejuvenate the Ganga river.
The Namami Gange Project, launched in 2014, was designed to address pollution and conserve the river through effective sewage treatment, industrial effluent control, and public awareness. However, this incident raises critical questions about on-ground execution.
The very STP that was built to stop untreated water from entering the river is now seen violating its purpose. Dirty water flowing into the Ganga from the plant stands in direct contradiction to the goals of the mission and is a clear breach of National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives.
Local residents and environmental observers are voicing strong concerns. They’ve demanded that the authorities take immediate action to stop the pollution and investigate how such mismanagement is happening under a central government project aimed at river conservation.
At a time when preserving the Ganga is both an environmental and spiritual responsibility, such negligence cannot be ignored.
